This might be the only serious page on my web site. For the non-serious version of this, see the FAQ.
I wrote this blog because I wish I had something like it when I was a young man heading out on my own. The ability to cook a handful of simple, nutritious meals for yourself, be able to entertain a houseful of people at SuperBowl time, or impress a lady with a nice supper (or breakfast) should be within the repertoire of every young man. Sadly, it is not.
Cooking good food need not be complex, and it doesn’t require complex tools either. There are complex recipes, dishes, and kitchen gadgets to be sure, but not having them is barely a limitation. In fact, I’ve come to realize that there are advantages to having good basic cooking implements and nothing more:
- Cleaning, organizing, packing and moving are easier
- It forces you to learn some creative and often entertaining cooking techniques. (See Mmmm, Pie! for an example of creative and entertaining.)
My intent is to create an environment where a young man who knows little about cooking can not only find simple recipes, but also a way of seeing cooking as something fun to do.
I don’t expect women to enjoy my odd humour or my style, but you are welcome to be here. You’ll have to ignore the socks hanging off the chandelier. I don’t dust up there very often.
To create this blog I imposed some constraints on myself, and then followed where it went.
For the most part I only use a 12” cast iron skillet, an enamel dutch oven, and common items you could find in any kitchen. My recipes use ingredients a well-stocked kitchen could have, or that are available at any small grocer. I also rule out techniques with too much prep time, or that only use a half can of “something-or-other”, unless there is an obvious use for the other half can.
I hope you enjoy my blog, and if you happen to know of people who could use what I have to offer, send them this way.
